No island of the blessed: self-plagiarism in Taiwan?

I was tipped off that the following two articles presumably represent duplicate publication. I fully support the allegation that the 2002 article from the Journal of Pathology represents a case of self-plagiarism.

PNAS called, want their gels back

Well OK, they haven’t called yet but they still might. The whistleblower who spotted the hot new Cell paper discussed in the December 5th blog entry (American as Apple Pie) now points out that it has immunoblot slices shared with a PNAS paper published by the same lab on June 14th. Both papers have the same first author. Readers are invited to compare PNAS Figure 1C with Cell Figure 6E.

A whisteblower alerted me to the fact that the Japanese investigative blog http://blog.m3.com/Retraction
published postings on presumably manipulated articles from the Matsubara lab.
He told me that Dr Matsubara became a professor/director at the department of cardiovascular medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University School of Medicine in Mar 2003 after he had served as an associate professor at the Kansai Medical University, Japan.
